Green biorefineries process forage crops such as grass and clover to extract protein and energy.
An important by-product of this process is the press cake, a fibre-rich residue that is produced when the liquid is pressed out of the biomass.
The press cake can be used as animal feed or for biogas production, but it can also be converted into biochar through a process called pyrolysis.
This technology is part of the Green Valleys project, which aims to create more circular and sustainable agricultural systems. By utilising all parts of the biomass, we can increase the profitability of biorefineries while creating a long-term carbon sink.
In the film, we see biochar being spread at the Uddetorp Agricultural College.
